About Us

We provide free and confidential counselling for young people aged 11-21 who live, learn or work in Milton Keynes. We offer an Initial Meeting followed by six sessions of counselling and work with a range of issues including anxiety, depression, anger, recovery from abuse, family problems, relationship difficulties and many more. The Initial Meeting is held before counselling begins so that young people can discuss any questions they may have about counselling and to make sure that this is the right service at the right time for their needs.

The service is run independently by YiS although the spaces used are owned by other organisations. We also run counselling sessions for students at several local schools and as well as for residents of local parish areas through their Parish Council.

YiS Youth Counselling Service is a long running independent charity with a BACP (British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists) Accredited Service. This means that our counselling service has demonstrated a high quality of delivery, meeting benchmark standards for counselling & psychotherapy provision maintained by ongoing assessment. In addition, BACP Accredited Services work within the BACP's Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions (2018).

We have a mix of experienced, qualified counsellors and counsellors in training. All counsellors receive 90 minutes of supervisory contact per month through a mix of individual and group supervision along with regular CPD (Continuing Professional Development) and line management.

Our counsellors come from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and qualifications. They use a variety of counselling models, but all are well versed in working with children and young people in a humanistic, brief solution focused manner. You can find out more about types of counselling from the BACP website.

If you are interested in counselling for us, and have already qualified or are in your last diploma year, please do visit our volunteering page.

The charity is overseen by a board of volunteer trustees. They are responsible for strategic oversight and development of YiS and come with the expertise and/or enthusiasm to help us better support young people’s mental health in Milton Keynes. If you are interested in becoming a trustee, or would like to find out more, please visit our volunteering page.
